I went to see Dr. Waples (my oncologist) at CCI yesterday. He has ordered a PET scan for Tuesday. That is a perfect time for God to show up and bring healing for His glory. Pray with me, that it reveals no cancer if that is God's will. If it is God's will for me to walk through this valley, please pray that the cancer has not spread anywhere else. I am scheduled to get my port put in Thursday morning and my first chemo treatment directly afterwards. To God be the glory! ~Renee Sutton

Biopsy Report

I found a lump in my left breast on June 19th. I called the OB/GYN on Monday the 20th. I had a mammogram and ultrasound on Tuesday the 21st. The doctor called me on Wednesday the 22nd and said it looked like a carcinoma. He scheduled me to see a surgeon. I saw the surgeon on Thursday the 23rd. I had my biopsy done on the 23rd. Today I found out that the results to my biopsy were atypical cells which the doctor said he felt sure were cancer cells. I have an appointment tomorrow in Huntsville and a scheduled lumpectomy for Friday, July 2. I am not quite sure what I will do, but I know in whom I believe. I know that He has plans for me. He has not and never will forsake me. He makes ALL things work together for my good.

Joey and I are participating in the Leader of Leaders Program at the Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston. We are pursuing a Master of Arts in Urban Ministry from GCTS.

Dr. Eldin Villafane is the Department Chair of Urban Ministerial Studies at Gordon Conwell Seminary. Dr. Villafane has been a joy to sit under. He is anointed by the Holy Spirit in his teaching and has a passion for ministering to broken people. In addition to his teaching at Gordon Conwell and Harvard University, Dr. Villafane is the author of "Beyond Cheap Grace" and "Seek the Peace of the City."

Two of my friends led this morning's devotion before class. On the left is Bishop Joey Garcia, Overseer of California Spanish and on the right is Bishop Franklin Ferguson, Pastor of E Street Church of God of Prophecy in Nassau, Bahamas. These two friends have been a pleasure to spend time with this week.

The Center for Urban Ministerial Education at Gordon Conwell Seminary. The CUME Center is a huge building constructed in 2006 by the Seminary in the South part of Boston. This beautiful, state of the art building is located in the heart of inner-city Boston by design. It's focus is on bringing Christ to those who are hurting most in the inner-city. The 118 acre main campus of GCTS is located on Boston's North Shore.

Momentum and Leadership

Momentum is extremely important when leading.

There are two types of momentum: the kind that comes from something positive that has happened through no work of your own, and momentum that comes when you MAKE something positive happen.

Momentum is so important to the growth of any church or organization that if you don't have it, it's time to do something to create it!

Remember, momentum has to have a starting place. When something good happens (by accident or with purpose), consider it the beginning of your momentum, and capture the enthusiasm of those you lead. You get the ball rolling, and let them push it. Pretty soon, it'll be going so fast that you can't keep up.

I just wanted to share the goodness of God with you today, because He is so good to me. I had a rough morning. We all got up late and of all days, Tayler and Will had bad hair days. I had to fix both of their hair twice. When I finally got myself ready, already 5 minutes late for leaving, I couldn't find one of my shoes. This never happens, because I am pretty organized. I didn't have time to change, so I had to wear some shoes that looked terrible with my outfit. So when I arrived at work, late of course, my boss said " I have an early anniversary present for you, but I want you to have it today ". My year anniversary at work will be September 10. I opened a beautifully wrapped gift that had a pair of zebra Volatile shoes that I have been wanting for months. God used my boss to show me just how much He loves me. I am truly blessed and overwhelmed that the God who created the universe and all that is in it, cares that much for me and my petty problems. We are truly a blessed people.

Great Job Will! Will won several ribbons at Field Day at McBride today. He won the Blue Ribbon (First Place) for his class in the 40 meter race and the Red Ribbon (Second Place) for the entire 5th grade in the 40 meter dash.

He also competed in several other events and did very well. He was chosen to compete in the 100 meter 4 man relay for his class. They did great!

NEW YORK CITY - Speakers at a conference on climate change are making the case that the alarmism behind the global-warming bandwagon is politically motivated, has nothing to do with science, and could affect the sovereignty of the U.S.

The second annual International Conference on Climate Change hosted by The Heartland Institute is well under way in New York City. More than 700 registrants have gathered in the Big Apple to hear more than 70 scientists -- representing the views of tens of thousands of their colleagues -- make the argument that media and environmental advocacy groups have it all wrong, that global warming is not a crisis.

One of the headlining speakers to open the event Sunday evening was European Union and Czech Republic President Vaclav Klaus, who was welcomed with a standing ovation. Klaus, one of the most outspoken critics of manmade global warming in Europe, says those who propagate global-warming hysteria are like the communists of old Europe. Like global-warming alarmists, he stated, the communists did not listen to opposing views.

"They didn't even try to argue back," said Klaus. "They considered you a naïve, uninformed and confused person, an eccentric complainer....It is very similar now."

Klaus believes that politicians who propagate global warming hysteria only have one goal in mind: control of the public. "It is evident that the environmentalists don't want to change the climate," he said. "They want to change our behavior...to control and manipulate us."

And he warns that those same politicians wish to engage in energy rationing -- all because of a problem that he believes does not exist. Klaus concluded his speech with this remark.

"The environmentalists speak about saving the planet. We have to ask -- From what? And from whom?" said the EU leader. "I think I know [those answers] for sure. We have to save the planet, and us, from them."

Dr. Richard Lindzen, who has been Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at MIT for over 25 years, was one of the keynote speakers on the opening day. He said global warming hysteria is more about a political agenda and has nothing to do with science.

"I think [there is] one point you should notice as one discusses the science, and that is that global warming alarm -- as far as I can tell -- has always been a political movement, a highly organized one," Lindzen observed. "And although it took me a while to realize this, opposing it has always been an uphill battle."

The MIT professor, one of the world's most respected atmospheric physicists, said that many of his good friends and colleagues have subscribed to global warming alarmism because they either fear for their jobs or see it as a way to get funding for scientific projects. He also discussed the use of supposed "climate models," and quipped that as scientists debate intelligent design, climate models are an example of "unintelligent design."

Lindzen contends that climate models are being fed erroneous information in order to get the results that global-warming alarmists want.

Dr. Michael Coffman is the CEO of Sovereignty International, a U.N. watchdog organization. During an interview at the conference with OneNewsNow, he explained that the basis of his skepticism regarding global warming comes from research he himself has conducted.

"During the 1980s and early 1990s, I lead a multimillion-dollar research effort on global warming and found that the data that was being collected just didn't support the hypothesis that man was causing global warming," says Coffman.

Therefore he concludes that any money thrown at fixing the alleged problem is a waste.

"Any amount of money that we spend on it is not going to change any temperatures whatsoever," he observes, arguing that every family in America will be affected. "Because depending upon what legislation is passed, it will actually cause every American family to spend at least two- to five-thousand dollars more a year...to try to support this effort to curb carbon-dioxide emissions."

Coffman warns that politicians are moving towards having an international tribunal established which will regulate carbon emissions. "Which means basically since carbon dioxide is involved in all elements of business in the United States, ...whoever does this controls the economy of the United States, and therefore our sovereignty," he cautions.

Later Monday a keynote speaker from Congress will be discussing the political aspect of global warming in greater detail.

I read this post on my friend Don Brock's blog (www.don-brock.blogspot.com) and wanted to include it here. As I read this, I was convicted of all of the things on this list that I have done. May we be all that our children need us to be as parents.

Ministry can be very hard on pastor’s children:
- Your kids will hear you criticized.
- Your kids will watch you hurt.
- Your kids may see you wrongly strike back.
- Your kids might see your hypocrisy up close.
- Your kids might reject the church because you’re always there.
- Your kids may enjoy the extra attention when they are young and despise it when they mature.

No matter how healthy your church is, a pastor’s kid will likely feel a different sort of pressure. Here are a few things we do to help our kids grow up in the fishbowl:
- Put the kids’ activities ahead of the church calendar.
- Rarely work evenings. The evenings should be family time. Try not to compromise your day off with church needs.
- Don’t talk about your kids in a sermon without their permission.
- Try not to talk negatively about the church.
- Give the kids a break from church. Every now and then, let them stay home or do something else so going to church doesn’t become a legalistic chore.
- Live your private life with personal devotion to Christ.
Pray and talk about spiritual things with our children regularly.

Last night was our second bit of snow this year. The roads were a little "slick" and school was delayed until 10 a.m. today. It was beautiful this morning and nice to watch as it fell last night.

Last night Will made the world's biggest snowball! That is NOT on a plate or flat surface... that is the actual size of the snowball!

We decorated the house last night for Christmas. With the snow coming down outside, fireplace burning inside and Christmas music playing, it was a perfect night.

Yes, it is exactly 40 years today since Brian Sutton was born. 40 years since his Mother gave birth to the wonderfully talented, exceptionally intelligent, undeniably gorgeous and of course modest Brian. Just about everyone who knows Brian is astounded by how good he looks for his age. Brian is the pastor of Cliff Haven Church and many of his members thought he was at least ten years younger than he is. Brian's impeccable dress sense combines style and fashion but this is only one factor in his youthful appearance. Brian's black hair (he insists it is the natural color) is never anything but perfect, but, it is his piercing youthful eyes that are without doubt his most charming weapon. One glance and you can be hypnotized into doing just about anything Brian chooses to ask of you. A two or three second stare and you are his servant for life. Brian's generosity is also well known, both with his time and resources. Brian is always one of the first to lend a hand when needed, first to offer his advice and first to lend you a couple of bucks when you are short. Throughout his 40 years Brian has always been considerate and kind always putting others before himself. His unselfish manner and thoughtful consideration for those around him are just two of the reasons he has remained such a popular and likeable character all these years. All who know him, particularly his close friends and family who are thrilled to be celebrating his 40th birthday with him, loves Brian. Brian has truly been an excellent son, a fantastic husband, great pastor and the world’s greatest father. We are privileged to be associated with such a fine, outstanding and truly remarkable man. We had a great night last night. Tayler & Will had a soccer game against Covenant. It was great that Tayler would be able to be there for the entire game. She has been practicing basketball every day and she has missed at least half of her last three games. She made it to the last game with only 8 minutes to go. She has been working so hard recently, pushing herslf to the limit. We are so proud of her and her dedication to being the best that she can be.

Anyway... last night we were blessed to have mother come to the game to see the kids. Also our dear friends from Hackleburg: Brent, Angela & Matt Fincher and Greg, Lisa & Bailey Stidham came all the way up just to see Tayler & Will play. We were so honored to have them. Renee and I commented what great friends that they are to us. We know that they are so true blue and would do anything in the world for us. We love them.

We won our soccer game 1-0! The kids both played GREAT! Will played goal keeper for the last 10 minutes and stopped many shots on goal and Tayler continued to be the team leader and played wonderfully.

Tayler found out yesterday that she has scored over the 95th percentile on her Stanford Achievement Test. This admits her into the Duke University Talent Identification Program. We are so very proud of her! Congratulations Tayler!

Today the student council election was held at school. Students prepared their speeches and gave them today. Will worked very hard on his speech. He wrote and practiced it himself, only asking for minor "input" from us.

Will gave his speech today, then the class held the election. Thankfully, Will was elected to serve his class for the second year in a row. He was blessed to receive 24 of the 26 votes cast.

God bless Will as he fulfills his God ordained destiny of service to his class, his state and eventually his country!

We had a great day Friday during the Muscle Shoals Homecoming festivities. We attended the parade in the afternoon. Tayler rode in the car with her friend Brooklyn. Brooklyn asked her to be with her so she wouldn't be alone, and Tayler had a great time being with her.

We attended the game and had a super time there as well. Muscle Shoals won their first game of the season against Wilson.

Tayler & Will played their first soccer game of the season tonight. The game was a hard fought one against the Thunder. It ended in a 3-3 tie. They each played great.

- 80% of seminary graduates will leave ministry in the first 5 years
- 70% of pastors are grossly underpaid (compared to the amount of work they do)
- 80% of pastors’ spouses believe their spouse is overworked
- 50% of pastors feel unable to meet the needs of the job
- 80% of pastors say they have insufficient time with their family
- 56% of pastors’ spouses have no close friends
- 80% of pastors’ kids seek professional help for depression
- 80% of pastors feel unqualified and discouraged in their role as pastors.

Here are some more stats:
- 50% of pastors are so discouraged they would leave the ministry if they could, but have no other way of making a living.
- 85% of pastors said their greatest problem is they are sick and tired of dealing with problem people.
- 90% of pastors said the hardest thing about ministry is dealing with uncooperative people.
- 95% of pastors do not regularly pray with their spouses.
- 70% of pastors do not have a close friend, confidant or mentor.
- 66% of pastors and their families feel pressure to model the ideal family to their congregations and communities.
- 5 years - the average tenure of a pastor at a church.
- 1500 pastors leave ministry each month due to moral failure, burnout or contention in their churches.
- Pastors who work fewer than 50 hours a week are 35% more likely to be terminated.

Approximately 4,000 new churches begin each year while more than 7,000 churches close down each year.

Tayler & Will have started the school year off with a bang. Tayler loves 7th grade and Will loves 5th. They have great teachers and classmates. Will went to Hackleburg tonight to spend the night with Matt and Tayler is getting ready for a back to school dance at the gym.
